Pros:

Attorney-Authored Informational Articles

Nolo has one of the richest collections of legal information on the internet. They have thousands of articles about legal topics, most of them authored by lawyers or other legal professionals. They are easy to understand and contain step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish different legal tasks. These articles, house in Nolo’s Legal Encyclopedia, are a great way to get an overview of a legal topic and to find a starting point for further information. There are sections on the encyclopedia devoted to business formation and small business law.

Ideal If You’ll be Using the Same Form Multiple Times

If you find yourself using the same legal forms over and over again, then Nolo can be a great value. For $30-$44 per year, depending on the form, you can re-edit, duplicate, re-download, and re-print your form multiple times. For example, if you use the same NDA with every new hire or use a variation of the same contract with every supplier, then this works out to a great value.

Great for People Who Prefer Offline Legal Support

In the days of cloud and online access, it can be hard to find offline legal help anymore unless you visit a law library. Fortunately, Nolo still offers many of their legal resources and guides in physical book form. Each book contains step-by-step instructions and relevant legal forms, and the content is updated to the current year. At $25-$40 per book, it’s also a great value for people who prefer offline legal help.

NOLO: Strong Points

  • Up-to-date – Nolo manages to successfully keep their downloadable software up-to-date with the latest laws, formatting, and required documents across the whole legal field.
  • Multiple users – Nolo’s WillMaker software can facilitate multiple wills to be created for all family members, meaning you can really get the most out of this one-off purchase.
  • Ease-of-use – It may not be as stylish as other Willmakers, like Willing, but the software is incredibly easy to navigate with simple, jargon-free multiple-choice questions.
  • Help resources – The software comes with a user manual which is very helpful to the many questions you may have. The eBook provided in the WillMaker Book & Software kit (same price) is comprehensive, with a whopping 17 chapters, covering just about all aspects of the law that you’re currently interacting with. There’s also a great FAQ section.
  • Credible – Many are only concerned with one question: is Nolo’s Quicken WillMaker & Trust legit? The answer is a resounding yes. Nolo’s Quicken WillMaker & Trust reviews are one way to convince you of that if their reputable track history isn’t enough.
  • Comprehensive – As we can see in the aforementioned services section, there is a vast array of legal documents you can create using store.nolo.com

Ease of Use

Nolo may not have the best website, with its design being somewhat linear and clustered. Once you get past that, using the will-making service is a smooth experience. Questions are asked to dictate what legal documents you will be needing, with answers automatically collated to produce a final, legally binding document.

The inputting fields seem to understand that circumstances vary and are nuanced, and they give you leeway accordingly. If you come across any problems, there are two separate FAQ pages, one for the WillMaker and one for technical support.

You’re not required to have a powerful PC to run the software. Requirements are on the website and include 2GB RAM, 54MB Hard Disk space, and Windows 8 or higher (and MacOS 10.12 and higher). Something you may not have considered, but make sure to buy the downloadable version as you need a CD-ROM for the hard copy.

Like with most WillMakers, you can save your progress as you go and come back to it at a later time. Being a software is inconvenient, but it may pose advantageously over a web-based design in that it’s steady. You won’t come across flash problems or other browser plugins interfering — the software is reliable and functional.

Bottom Line on Nolo

Nolo is a great self-service legal portal for small business owners. Nolo’s mission has always been to make legal information accessible to everyone, and they are succeeding. Whether you need a legal form, a local lawyer’s help, help incorporating your business, or an in-depth look at a legal topic with an ebook, Nolo offers it all at an affordable price.
